Farid Johnson

Dear Siwanoy Families,

Well, one thing is for sure, Siwanoy's got talent! Huge shout out to Maddy Mercer for spearheading this well attended event.

Thank you to Dr. Champ and Will Treves for jumping on our PTA meeting last night. It was an informative and productive meeting. It is always helpful for the community to hear information from the people that have a influential hand in making decisions that affect our community.

Please note that on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, we will have an early dismissal  This is for one of our Professional Development workshops.  It will be a 1pm dismissal for students, right after lunch.  Thank you, in advance, for picking your children up on time.  We really appreciate it. We look forward to another great week ahead. Keep spreading the love and have an awesome weekend!

Sincerely,
Farid Johnson

4th grade Journeys into American Indian Territory
It took many people carrying materials up and down stairs with me, but it was worth is! Thank you Mr. Brown, Ms. Friedberg and Ms. Miro for helping early this morning.

Our fourth graders took a journey into American Indian territory today. Using an arts approach as exemplified in a moving museum and hands-on workshops, representatives of the Journeys Into American Indian Territory organization guided students to explore the components of culture of the Native Peoples of the Eastern Woodlands and Plains.

Students had the opportunity to see firsthand how the native peoples used their natural resources to meet their needs and wants.  Students also had an opportunity to explore the artifacts in the museum, to feel various animal skins, drill holes with sharp wooden sticks and grind corn.

Huge shout out to our Siwanoy PTA for continuously supporting this incredible program.

Our 2nd graders try to "Stump the Principal" in Number Hive
Our second graders challenged Mr. Johnson to a game of Number Hive.  Using subtraction or addition you try to connect four cells together in this fun game.

Phrase of the month is "problem solving".
Problem solving is the process of identifying, analyzing, and finding solutions to challenges or obstacles. It involves critical thinking, decision making, flexibility, and creativity. Developing problem-solving skills promotes resilience and independence.

Our Kindergarten Registration portal is still open for the 2025-2026 school year.
Please register your incoming kindergartener as soon as possible as it helps us to get a handle on the number of kindergarten classes we will need in the upcoming school year.  We really appreciate those of you who have already registered.

National Nutrition Month® is an annual campaign established in 1973 by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. During the month of March, everyone is invited to learn about making informed food choices and developing healthful eating and physical activity habits. This year's theme is "Food Connects Us." Food is a connecting factor for many of us. Food connects us to our cultures, our families and our friends. Sharing a meal is an opportunity to learn about its preparation, who made it and where the ingredients were sourced. Health, memories, traditions, seasons and access can all impact our relationship with food. While these factors influence the foods we eat, the foods we eat also affect our health. Here are some ideas you can do at home:
-As a family, commit to trying a new fruit or vegetable each week during National Nutrition Month®.
-Give family members a role in meal planning and let them pick out different recipes to try.
-Plan to eat more meals together as a family during National Nutrition Month®.
-Explore food recovery options in your community.
-If you watch TV, take breaks during commercials to be physically active.
-Practice mindful eating by limiting screen time at mealtime — including phones, computers, TV and other devices.
-Try more meatless meals — choices like beans and lentils are versatile plant-based protein sources that work in a variety of dishes.
-Let everyone help with food preparation — a valuable skill for people of all ages. If you have kids, there are age-appropriate tasks they may enjoy learning how to do.
-Bring out the flavors of food by trying new herbs, spices or citrus fruit such as lemon or lime.
