Friday Update 11/10/2023

Dear Siwanoy Families,

Happy Veterans Day! We hope that you have a relaxing three day weekend, give thanks to a Veteran and enjoy a very Happy Diwali to all of you who celebrate. May your year be free from darkness and full of light. The energy and vibe during yesterday's event was incredible! Thank you to Mirielle, Julia, the PTA and everyone else that took part in planning this breathtakingly amazing event!

Veteran's Day celebration on Monday November 13th

Our site based committee is continuing our "year of service" initiative. On Monday, November 13th, we will have a visit from a very special veteran who will come speak with our students, William Gum. He served as a Lieutenant Commander pilot in the Navy. Please come to school dressed in red, white and blue or in camouflage in honor of our special guest and for Veteran's Day.

Candy collection drop off

The Siwanoy Dads Club will be collecting Halloween candy for the Veterans and for HOPE Community Services. Candy can be dropped off in the main hallway during school hours.

Parent/Teacher conferences - Save the dates

More information will be coming out soon, but please make a note that Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on November 30th in the evening and December 1st during the day. School will be closed on Friday, December 1st for conferences.

Report Cards

The portal will be open to parents for first term report cards on December 14, 2023. Parent/Teacher conferences will be on November 30th in the evening and all day on December 1st. Please note that since report cards are coming out 3 weeks after conferences, you will receive progress information on the conference day. If you have questions about how your child may do on the upcoming report card based on their progress, please ask them during your conference time with your teacher. Scores on the report card should not be a surprise and our teachers are ready to answer any questions you may have during conferences.

Perennial Math - Deadline November 17th

Students in grades 3, 4 & 5 who like to be challenged in math can meet twice a month in school during our regular day (not during lunch). There is no cost for this program. Please use the attached to sign up. Deadline is November 17th.

Our next Siwanoy University - December 11th

I am happy to announce that Siwanoy University has been abuzz around the community. Our next topic will be about the MTSS process (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support). Ms. Asfendis (our MTSS chair and special education teacher) and myself will give you an overview of the process, it's origins that are based in the framework of response to intervention, and how it relates to how instruction. If interested, please sign up and mark of if you will need child care for the event. Child care will be provided through the PTA and Playful Wonders. Socktober at Siwanoy still going strong through thanksgiving week

Every night in the United States an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets. Socks are the MOST requested and LEAST donated item. We want to join forces to prove that even the smallest acts of love and kindness, like donating a new pair of socks, can make a BIG difference in the lives of our neighbors in need. Please donate a NEW pair of socks and place it in the bin in the upstairs hallway. Donations gratefully accepted through thanksgiving week.

DARE Program Schedule - 5th Grade Only

Below are the days the DARE officers will be in the building working with your children. Please feel free to ask them follow-up questions on these days to further the discussion and importance of what they learned in DARE.

The DARE graduation will take place on January 10th. Parents will be invited!

Orchestra Night for third graders - November 14th

Our third grade Orchestra Night is finally here. It will be this Tuesday, November 14, @6:30-7:30pm in the Hutchinson Gym. This event is for third grade orchestra students and their parent(s) only to come and play their instruments and to have fun. Students MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian for this event, and no siblings, please. 

5th grade moving up ceremony - June 17th

Our 5th grade moving up ceremony will be on June 17 at 4pm. Mark your calendars. It will be here before you know it.

Word of the Month - Appreciation

To appreciate means to recognize the good qualities of someone or something. We can show appreciation for many things in our lives, including family, friends, health, and opportunities and experiences. Being appreciative also means being grateful and thankful.
