Friday Update 9/15/2023
Farid Johnson

Dear Siwanoy families,

Congratulations on completing the first full week of the school year! Our students have been energized, excited and filled with enthusiasm. Thank you to everyone who came out to our annual welcome back picnic. We had a great time. For those of you who could not make it, we officially cut the ribbon to open our new playground! Thank you to everyone that helped make this dream become a reality. Our students have been ecstatic and over the moon about all of the features. It really does take a village to make these things happen and I am fortunate to have a very special community supporting everything that we do for our students!

In keeping with positive community vibes, let's be positive with each other during dismissal procedures. Please adhere to all of the parking and traffic signs around the school. Pedestrian safety is extremely important. Dismissal can be a stressful time because we have such a narrow street, but please be patient with one another. I will be out there more to help facilitate the process and to help alleviate some of the traffic congestion.

Back to School Nights

  • Grades K-2 - 9/18 from 6:30-7:30
  • Grades 3-5 - 9/19 from 6:30-7:30

We will begin promptly in the gym at 6:30. If you cannot make it for the opening, teachers will begin their classroom talks around 6:50. 5th grade students will be on site to escort you to your child's classroom.

Reflections and Suggestions

The mantra we created at Siwanoy is "everydayabetteryou". I believe in this way of life with every fabric of my being. As a principal and as a person in general, I spend a great deal of time reflecting and thinking of ways to be better. I cannot do that alone, so I am asking for your help. If you have ideas, concerns, or think that I can be doing something differently to better our school, please use the following outlets:

  • Direct communication - I encourage you to reach out to me if you have a concern. I am outside in the mornings at arrival and in the afternoon at dismissal. I invite conversations, feedback, and ideas about how to make our school the best in Westchester. So, please reach out to me if you feel comfortable enough to do so. My door is always open. I cannot fix an issue/concern or change a behavior if I am not made aware there is an issue in the first place.
  • PTA Reps - If you do not feel comfortable reaching out directly to me and want to be more anonymous, please reach out to anyone in the PTA. I have a very good relationship with our PTA and they can come to me with concerns, feedback and ideas as well.

Siwanoy University

This year, I would like to start the Siwanoy University for parents. This would be informational sessions held in the evening a couple of times per year to give you all insight to the different things happening here at Siwanoy. These topics will range from curriculum, social emotional learning, special education more. Please use the link below to write in a topic that you may want to know more about. The first one will take place in October and will cover executive functioning. Topics for Siwanoy University
