Dear Pelham Parents and Community Members,
This evening, I am extremely pleased to be recommending that the Board of Education appoint Farid Johnson as the next Principal of Siwanoy School. Mr. Johnson, who will succeed Mrs. Gilbert in July, currently serves as Principal of Stony Point Elementary School in the North Rockland Central School District and has substantial administrative experience as an assistant principal in Hastings-on-Hudson and New York City.
Throughout the screening process, Mr. Johnson emerged as an impressive candidate from a robust and talented field. His skillset, demeanor and ability to communicate were evident throughout the process, which involved interviews with myself and my cabinet, committees of parents, administrators, teachers and support staff, and a final interview with the Board of Education. We believe that his broad experience and leadership ability make him an excellent fit to build upon the incredible legacy of Siwanoy School and carry on the tradition of ensuring that "Every Child Matters." In his current position, Mr. Johnson has managed a number of initiatives that are consistent with the goals of our District and Strategic Plan, including introducing and implementing the Reader's and Writer's Workshop across his District, creating a safe and nurturing environment for students using a Positive Behavior Interventions Supports model, and building a strong school culture through Town Hall meetings and other forums. Additionally, Mr. Johnson has a diverse background in elementary instruction, having served as a math instructional coach, fifth grade general education teacher, third grade collaborative team teacher, and third/fourth grade self-contained special education teacher.
"I am excited to be in Pelham because this is a district that is doing things that I believe in from a curriculum and social/emotional perspective," said Mr. Johnson. "I love the commitment to being great and the community vibe. Pelham is a district that seems to care about relationships and bringing people together as one united front. I am proud and honored to be the incoming principal of Siwanoy Elementary. I hope to continue the great success of the school and I look forward to bringing smiles and laughter to my new students, staff, and community members."
Mr. Johnson received a Masters Degree in Leadership for Educational Change from Bank Street College of Education. He also has a M.P.S. Degree in Childhood and Special Education and a B.A. in Business Management and Finance from Manhattanville College.
I would like to thank Mrs. Gilbert for her incredible leadership over the past 17 years and look forward to working with her over the remaining months of the school year. Her steady hand has been essential in navigating the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic and we are fortunate to have her during this time.
Please join me in welcoming Mr. Johnson to both the Siwanoy and Pelham Public Schools community!
